Goal

To identify a safe, comfortable, convenient, and interconnected nonmotorized transportation network for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel throughout the MDOT Bay Region.

Summary

Michigan is a bicycling paradise with its scenic vistas and miles of picturesque orchards and waterfront. The 2019 MDOT Bay Region Nonmotorized Plan and Map are updates from the 2011 MDOT Bay Region Nonmotorized Plan and Map.  The MDOT Bay Region encompasses a 15-county region, including Arenac, Bay, Clare, Iosco, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Midland, Huron, Tuscola, Sanilac, Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee and St Clair.

The recently completed plan and map were a collaborative effort between MDOT and the Region.  The Region included representatives from local bicycle clubs, bicycle shops, as well as representatives of local government entities.  In addition, the Bay Region Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee acted as the advisory committee for the plan and offered their insight throughout the process.  The plan identifies existing and proposed nonmotorized facilities, which include paved shoulders, 4 feet in width or greater and shared use paths used for nonmotorized vehicles.  The plan also recognized regional and local facilities that comprise the interconnected regional trail system throughout the Bay Region.

 The map shows road surface types, traffic volumes, paved/unpaved trails with regional significance, recreational facilities, points of interest, and other amenities that make cycling across Michigan more enjoyable. Copies of the existing map are available at www.michigan.gov/mdot-biking and/or EMCOG office in Saginaw, MI and on EMCOGs website at www.emcog.org.

The existing and proposed facilities on the map are from 2019.  The EMCOG region and MDOT Bay region have been fortunate in this time to continue to have new facilities built and trails constructed.  Information on updated facilities should be sent to EMCOG via the Send Comments link below.
